It doesnt try to feel premium in every way, but what it does, it tends to do well: big-SUV presence, usable power, a decent interior for long trips, and lots of utility. The standard engine in the SLE is a 5.3-liter V8 with direct injection, variable valve timing, and GMs EcoTec3 technology. It delivers strong acceleration, especially for merging or hauling, and the torque output gives it the ability to tow heavy loads without feeling overwhelmed. Transmission is a six-speed automatic, which works smoothly though the shifts arent especially crisp under all conditions. Because of the size and weight, fuel economy is modestacceptable for this class, especially when comparing to alternatives with similar capabilitybut youll notice it in daily driving or in stop-and-go.Ride comfort and highway manners are among the strengths. The Yukon has a sizable, heavy frame, which helps it stay planted over rough highways and under wind loads. Suspension tuning leans toward smoothing out bumps rather than sporty cornering, so body roll is noticeable in sharp turns, but thats expected. Noise insulation is respectable: wind, road, and engine noise creep in when pushed, but for regular cruising the cabin remains comfortable. Visibility up front is good, and the large windows provide a spacious feel; getting into tight parking or maneuvering in cramped areas is where its size shows its limits.Inside, you get a large cabin built for capacity. Seating for seven to nine depending on configuration, with three rows, is useful for families, road trips, or groups. Materials in the SLE are decentpremium cloth, good plastics in visible places, though trims like slats, stitching, and finish are simpler than in the premium versions. Features like tri-zone climate control, remote start, heated side mirrors, and a good infotainment system help the everyday experience. The rear cargo space (especially behind the third row) is limited, as is typical, but folding down rear seats frees up a lot of usable room.On safety and utility, the Yukon SLE gives you a strong base. Backup camera, parking sensors (in many cases), stability/traction controls, and various driver aids when optionally equipped give peace of mind. Towing capacity is strong when properly equipped; payload is generous. If you expect heavy loads, trailers, or frequent family hauling, the Yukon SLE delivers more than many smaller SUVs.The downsides are the usual for big SUVs: fuel and maintenance costs are higher, maneuverability in tight city spots can be challenging, and acceleration, while strong for its size, is never going to feel nimble. Also, base trim means fewer luxury touchesno premium upholstery, fewer high-end trim finishes, more basic seatsso if you want more comfort or gloss youll have to step up or add options.Overall, the 2016 GMC Yukon SLE is a compelling choice if you need size, towing, and utility more than sport or luxury. For buyers who drive long distances, often carry people or cargo, or need towing capacity, its a strong pick. It wont be the most refined SUV in that segment, but it accomplishes reliably what so many in this class must.
